Сепульки 18-го века

nu57А придумал сепульки, оказывается, вовсе не Лем, а д-р Сэмюль Джонсон, знаменитый лексикограф и автор всё ещё актуального английского толкового словаря. Вот два определения из него (1755):
Network: Any thing reticulated or decussated, at equal distances, with interstices between the intersections.
Reticulated: Made of network; formed with interstitial vacuities.
Джонсон тоже любил позабавиться (а вы думали, только Даль?). Самым известным является его определение собственной профессии, а заодно и скуки:
Lexicographer: А writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the signification of words.
Dull: Not exhilarating; not delightful; as, to make dictionaries is dull work.
О поэтах он был тоже невысокого мнения:
Verseman: A poet; a writer in verse. In ludicrous language.
Насчет причудливых лакомств мнение Джонсона совпадает с мнением моего мужа,любителя простой мужской еды:
Kickshaw: A dish so changed by the cookery that it can scarcely be known.
Избавление собаки от глистов чем-то неаппетитно напоминает манеру поведения некоторых моих родственников:
To worm: To deprive a dog of something, nobody knows what, under his tongue, which is said to prevent him, nobody knows why, from running mad.
От овса веет неполиткорректностью:
Oats: A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland appears to support the people.
А мы с дочкой, когда были в Лондоне, разыскали дом д-ра Джонсона на задворках Флит-стрит. Рядом - дом его биографа Джеймса Босвелла. Во дворе стоит памятник, но не Джонсону, и не Босвеллу, а любимой кошке Джонсона:
Cat: A domestic animal that catches mice, commonly reckoned by naturalist the lowest order of the leonine species.
