"Very British Problems"

Ничего себе "very British". Почти все мои.

● Being unable to stand and leave without first saying "right"
● Not hearing someone for the third time, so just laughing and hoping for the best
● Saying "anywhere here's is fine" when the taxi is directly outside your front door
● Turning down a cup of tea for no reason and instantly knowing you've made a terrible, terrible mistake
● Being sure to start touching your bag 15 minutes before your station, so the person in the aisle seat is fully prepared for your exit
● The huge sense of relief after your perfectly valid train ticket is accepted by the inspector
● Deeming it necessary to do a little jog over zebra crossings, while throwing in an apologetic mini wave
● Changing from 'kind regards' to just 'regards', to indicate that you're rapidly reaching the end of your tether
● The horror of someone you only half know saying: "Oh I'm getting that train too"
● Indicating that you want the last roast potato by trying to force everyone else to take it
● Wondering if the cat will ever speak to you again
● Loudly tapping your fingers at the cash point, to assure the queue that you've asked for money and the wait is out of your hands
● Looking away so violently as someone nearby enters their PIN that you accidentally dislocate your neck
● Running out of ways to say thanks when a succession of doors are held for you, having already deployed 'cheers', 'ta' and 'nice one'
● Saying hello to a friend in the supermarket, then creeping around like a burglar to avoid seeing him again
● Being unable to pay for something with the exact change without saying "I think that's right"
● Punishing people who don't say thank you by saying "you're welcome" as quiet as possible
● Being unable to turn and walk in the opposite direction without first taking out your phone and frowning at it
● "I'm making tea, fancy one?" - "Only if you're having one."

Англичане учились на своих ошибках - на всех этих казнях в морду, крутых сменах линии партии, сами дошли до более или менее добровольного отпускания колоний и научились стараться жить, не мешая другим. До такой степени, что аж повесили это на свой флаг как "very British" - а это, говорю ж, нисколько не чисто английское, просто является следствием извлечения из мордобития уроков (не без перебора, но что уж там). Франция небось такой не стала - она своими революциями гордится, а не переживает; в России тоже идея вставать с колен плохо уживается с идеей виновато ускоряться на зебре. И у израильтян, при многих вызывающих у меня восхищение и любовь сантиментах, такого нет - потому что для этого нужны века медленного обучения. Спокойно перегородят проход тележкой и не почешутся - а жизнь тебе при этом спасут. Потому что сильные чувства идут прямо от хорошей души, а для refinement требуется время, спокойствие и рефлексия.

Про почему российская интеллигенция выбрала в качестве образца для подражания британцев, у меня есть мысль. Потому что "государственная" Россия последние пару веков, включая сейчас, была очень франкофильской, и по-крупному (имперскость и с колен), и в мелочах. Понятно, что инакомыслящей стороне импонировала Британия, с возможностью фиги в кармане и написания "regards" вместо "kind regards" чтобы показать, что ты в ярости.
